IN HIS OWN WORDS

The application of the therapy has given me a better understanding of this need to communicate which, in my view, lies at the very root of language.

A human being wants either to keep or rediscover a way of being in touch with the outside world and with another person, a way which gave him the greatest satisfaction when he was still in the embryonic state. From this point of view, we are all of us, as one of my commentators wrote, “homesick for the womb”.

The cry with which the infant greets his entry into the world is a cry of distress. Already it weeps for the lost paradise which was being experienced just a few moments earlier in his mother’s womb.

I know by heart the objections usually raised against this theory. Isn’t the contact of the fetus with the mother essentially a physical one? Isn’t it going too far in this context to bring up a relationship of a psychological nature?

I answer these objections with an argument the reader already knows: Language, too, possesses a physical dimension.

It is as if by being plunged into one’s own past, one were being offered a better way of mastering the future. By bringing the ear back to its earliest influences, the filtered sound treatment enables it in this roundabout way to achieve the most advanced stage of its evolution, that of “human listening”.

In a way, one never leaves one’s mother’s womb; the maternal environment is merely given further dimensions. The walls of the womb grow into the sides of the cradle, then of the room, then of the family, then of one’s native country, then of the whole earth, and finally of the cosmos.

My work with filtered sounds and the sonic birth has considerable extended my intellectual horizons and, in a more general way, my outlook as a human being.

The fact that I have been able to be present “live” at the birth of language has led me to a fundamental study of communication problems, personality disturbances, and, as a result, psychopathology. This cleared the way for me into psychology, which in turn opened the gates of philosophy.

In this way, I branched out far more widely than ever before from my original specializations. I evolved because necessity drove me. ‚Äč
